Exodus 11:1-3 (His Saving Grace)

V1 – The Lord would strike those who have held us captive with a very strong blow such that even they would be overwhelmed by that kind of power and would let us go.

The Lord saves us from our enemies with his powerful hand. Which enemy can stand in his way? All things, including the devil and his demons, tremble before the Lord. Nothing can stand in the Lord’s way. How precious it is that He is the one who sets us free from the captivity of sin and death and gives us life in Christ Jesus. Only He has the power to do that.

Psalm 136: 11-12 NLT –  He brought Israel out of Egypt. His faithful love endures forever.

He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm. His faithful love endures forever.

Anyone who calls on Him and trusts in Him and who does not love his guilty ways but looks up to Jesus for salvation, will be saved.

Psalm 68:19-21 NLT – Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day he carries us in his arms. Our God is a God who saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death. But God will smash the heads of his enemies, crushing the skulls of those who love their guilty ways.

V2-3 – Apart from saving us, The Lord makes our neighbors looks favorably on us and treat us well

The Egyptians always hated and looked down on the Israelites. Part of this was because they were shepherds. Over time, the Israelites had also greatly increased in number and therefore the Egyptians thought they would become too powerful for them and so they made the Israelites slaves.

But in verse 2 and 3, there is a change. The Lord makes the Egyptians look favorably on the Israelites and He made Moses a very great man. It is all the Lord’s doing and the Lord is able to do all this for us as well, if our ways are pleasing to Him.

Proverbs 16:7 NKJV – When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

Matthew 23: 13-36 (Hypocrisy)

V13 – Jesus calls the teachers of religious law and the pharisees… hypocrites. The merriam webster meaning of this is ” a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion. 2. : a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.”

It is a dangerous place to say one thing but behave the other way. A big question for me is… Am I a hypocrite? Do I say I love Jesus and I am his follower yet I do not do what He commands? Does my life (outward and inner) reflect Jesus?

V15 – When we have preached Christ and a person commits their life to be a disciple, we must be careful to teach them to keep their commitment and obedience to Him. We have to be careful to ensure that we ourselves are truly following the Lord so that we can be a good example of Faith.

The Pharisees made a lot of effort to convert people but then they made those converts children of hell, just like they themselves were.  Our light must shine and our salt must not lose its saltiness.

V16-22 – The pharisees did not seem to have in-depth of understanding of what they were doing and saying and that’s why Jesus calls them fools. They were materialistic and that’s why they would swear by the gifts on the altar, gold in the temple etc.  but failed to realize the more important side which Jesus was telling them here.

Jesus explains that when you swear by heaven, you are also swearing by the throne of God and by God. Swearing is like giving an oath and allegiance, it is a vow. And Jesus warns the Pharisees against careless use of vows without thought. And it is the same with us, be careful not to swear or vow unless you mean it and it is a Godly vow. When you make a vow, you must keep it.

Jesus explains it more in

Matthew 5:33-37 TLB – “Again, the law of Moses says, ‘You shall not break your vows to God but must fulfill them all.’ But I say: Don’t make any vows! And even to say ‘By heavens!’ is a sacred vow to God, for the heavens are God’s throne. And if you say ‘By the earth!’ it is a sacred vow, for the earth is his footstool. And don’t swear ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the capital of the great King. 36 Don’t even swear ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Say just a simple ‘Yes, I will’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.

The Message Bible puts it this way –

“And don’t say anything you don’t mean. This counsel is embedded deep in our traditions. You only make things worse when you lay down a smoke screen of pious talk, saying, ‘I’ll pray for you,’ and never doing it, or saying, ‘God be with you,’ and not meaning it. You don’t make your words true by embellishing them with religious lace. In making your speech sound more religious, it becomes less true. Just say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ When you manipulate words to get your own way, you go wrong.

V23-28 – Jesus now speaks about outward godliness and religion with inward hypocrisy. The Pharisees were very careful about outward appearances but did not care about true Godliness. They  did not care about justice, mercy and faith in Christ, and did not care walking in ways that are truly pleasing to God. Yet, they had the word of God and were actually teachers of the word of God. But even though they had it, they were not careful to learn God’s will. They had turned the word of God to be an instrument for their gain and glorification.

This is a warning to us, let us not be hypocrites because then we are dead. Our faith in Jesus must be genuine. Genuine disciples and servants, ready to do the father’s will.

V29-36 – The Pharisees and their ancestors were prophet killers and oppressors. And Jesus speaks of their judgement. The Lord made the effort to send “prophets and wise men and teachers of religious law” But the Pharisees and the people of Israel, rather than listening to them, injured and killed them. God sent messengers with his Word which has the power to save their souls but they rejected it and harmed the messengers.

Do you and I do the same?

Do you take with high esteem the word of God?  James says:

James 1:21 NLT – So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

A wholehearted devotion to God’s word, in reading, studying and obeying it will keep me in God’s path of life. It will encourage me, give me direction and build me up. Neglect of the scriptures is neglect of Christ.

V37-39 – In these verses, we see Jesus giving a warning to those who reject God’s word and his servant. The Lord always desires that He will bring us close to himself and keep us under his loving arms but we have to agree to be kept under his loving arms. We have to be ready to accept him and all He does for us but in addition, to be ready to obey Him.

Those who reject Him will have their house abandoned and will be desolate such that everyone will see how wretched they are. Rejecting Jesus is rejecting life. Failing to love him with our whole hearts is rejecting HIm.

Matthew 23: 8-12 (Our Father and Teacher; His Children and Servants)

V8 – We who believe in Jesus have one teacher, the Lord through his spirit.

John 14:26 NIV – But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

There are many times where we tend to exalt some people yet in essence, they are only students who have been taught by the Lord. By his grace, god gives different abilities to us for the edification of the believers and for training in righteousness. When our eyes stop seeing the Pastors, Apostles, Teachers, Evangelists, and Prophets as believers with grace from the Lord to do certain things, we begin giving them the glory that is the Lord’s.

Ephesians 4: 11-13 NLT –  Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

All of us are equal as brothers and sisters.

By exalting people or fellow brethren, we also start to accept all they say without verifying it through scripture and can thus be deceived.  Jesus Christ, our savior, remains to be our teacher.

V9-10 – In the same way, we should not call any person “Father” because God in heaven is our father. No one else deserves that title. It is God whom through Christ Jesus has brought us to salvation through his mighty power and we are now his children.

John 1:12 AMPC – But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—

We are his children if we believe him and continue in that manner to trust him, adhere to and rely on him. As good children, we must obey our father. We praise God because He is perfect and therefore we cannot be at fault when we obey Him. He has no imperfection and He is life in itself. We live by his power and through him and so, we can trust Him the direction He gives. Like in Proverbs, the Lord always says to us:

Proverbs 1:8 NLT – My child, listen when your father corrects you…..

Let us learn to obey Him. If we say we love Him, let us prove that this is true by obeying Him. Those who love him, obey Him and by doing so become more and more like Him because the purpose of his instruction is to make us more and more like Him. His desire is to bring us to “such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.” as explained in Ephesians 4:11-13 quoted above.

John 14:15 ESV – “If you love me, you will keep my commandments…

V21 GWT –  Whoever knows and obeys my commandments is the person who loves me. Those who love me will have my Father’s love, and I, too, will love them and show myself to them.

V23 GWT–  Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will go to them and make our home with them.

And here is the warning from Jesus

V24 GWT – A person who doesn’t love me doesn’t do what I say. I don’t make up what you hear me say. What I say comes from the Father who sent me.

V11-12 – Jesus here continues speaking in the context of the Pharisees who exalt themselves and love these high positions and respect from the people. He says an important thing – that those who love exaltation will be humbled, and those who love humilty and remain humble, they will be exalted.

It is not in your place to exalt yourself. God exalts those who are humble. And remember, even when He exalts you, still remain humble before Him. Humility and servanthood is a continuous nature which you and I must take on. It never ends.

We are called to be humble and to be servants. Willingly be a like a “slave” to everyone. Serve them without complaining and with joy. Get rid of constant complains and grumbling. These are not from God.

Philippians 2:14-16 – Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life.

Embrace forever servanthood. Serve God and his people willingly and joyfully and when you are done, you must still remain humble. These must be your words:

Luke 17:10 NLT – In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”

The verses above Luke 17:10 help to ensure we have context. Here is the full text from verses 7-10.

Luke 17:7-10 NLT –  “When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say, ‘Come in and eat with me’? 8 No, he says, ‘Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’ 9 And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not. 10 In the same way, when you obey me you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants who have simply done our duty.’”

It is your duty to obey Him.  Don’t exalt yourself. It’s not a favor, we are called to obey as faithful servants. And after obeying, we obey more and more, it never ends. Continuous obedience.

Matthew 23: 1-7 (Seek Him Continually)

V1-3 – There are people who understand the word of God and can teach it to others but they do not practice what they know in their minds and what they teach. The Pharisees know God’s Law and they are very careful to study and teach each of its commands. But apart from that, they do not take God’s word in their heart and obey it.

This is a dangerous place to be. When you know God’s word but it is not having any impact in your life, then more can be done?

James 1:22-23 NLT – But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.

V4 – The Pharisees seem to have taken pleasure in burdening people with all these regulations which were unbearable. But they themselves did not help to make these burdens lighter. They were masters of oppression in the name of keeping the law. But they did not participate in the carrying.

In contrast, the burden we get from Jesus is not heavy, it is light. It is the burden to obey him and to love Him wholeheartedly.

Matthew 11:28-30 NLT – Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

V5-7 – The Pharisees love what comes with their rabbi position, they do not love the God they teach about. They love power, recognition, honor where people almost tremble before them. Instead of giving glory to God, they were heaping up glory for themselves.

What a dangerous place to be. When teachers, preachers, servants of God in music, ministry, and other places… love the things that come with their position rather than loving God. This is where you, kind of, become your own god, and you worship yourself. Instead of working out your salvation with fear and trembling and giving glory to God, you are blinded by what comes with your service without a genuine love for God. You become filled with pride and fail to humble before the Lord.

Do you have a vibrant personal relationship with Christ? Or any connection you have to God ends with your service? What do you prize in your heart? Knowing the Lord and walking with Him or his blessings? Our goal should be like Paul, the Apostle…

Philippians 3 NLT – I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

My goal must be to seek him, earnestly, and to love Him, because then, He comes and makes a home in me.

Psalm 105:4 NLT – Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him.

“His face — the brightness of his personal character — is hidden behind the curtain of our carnal desires. This condition is always ready to overtake us. That is why we are told to “seek his presence continually.” God calls us to enjoy continual consciousness of his supreme greatness and beauty and worth.” From <https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/what-does-it-mean-to-seek-the-lord>

And what is the meaning of seeking Him?  It is setting our minds and our hearts fully on Him.

1 Chronicles 22:19 NLT – Now seek the Lord your God with all your heart and soul.

Colossians 3:1–2 NLT – Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.

I would say that seeking the Lord, therefore, is a constant never-ending pull and desire to be conscious of his presence in all we do, his love, his power, his justice and judgement and all He is, and being in communion with Him.

This involves a conscious choice to direct my heart, my thoughts on God. Every moment of every day. We do not seek Him as if He is lost, no. We seek him because our hearts and our minds are very prone to wandering away from focusing on Him. Seeking him is the battle in our minds to focus on Him continually.

It is a battle because there are very many obstacles that block us from constantly focusing on Him. Some of these include the worries of this life, entertainment and pleasure, work etc. All these, in all their good intentions, can easily become obstacles in such a way that God always feels far, yet He is not. It is in this sense that you would think as God always being hidden. He is revealed to those who are constantly seeking Him. Those who overcome these obstacles and give Him their attention constantly.

While there are truly many ways how we seek God and see him, two foundational ways that ought to be a constant for us is to seek him through His Word and to seek him through prayer.

And this is not the religious kind of prayer and reading of his word where we do it out of obligation or as a normal habit… it is seeking him in prayer with a true desire every time to meet Him. And it is reading his word and meditating upon it in order to know Him, not mere reading. It is to seek to understand what you read.

By practicing all this, I believe that our eyes also get opened to see him in many others areas. Including in other people’s lives, in creation etc.

Matthew 22: 41-46 (Jesus — Our Example to Follow)

V41 – After the Sadducees and Pharisees had tried to trap him with their questions and getting answers that silenced them, Jesus now asks them a question.

But there is a difference between Jesus asking them a question and them asking Jesus a question. Remember, the Sadducees and Pharisees had come to him wanting to trap him so that they could arrest him. Their questions were not fueled by an interest and desire for Godly knowledge, their questions were malicious in their intent. But Jesus could not do the same to them by seeking to trap them because that would be evil. And how do we know that Jesus’ intentions were pure, even in this case? The Bible records that:

I Peter 2: 21-23 NIV – To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

In a sense, Jesus was now showing them the questions that they should truly be asking. Jesus was not going to behave like them. He was going to ask them a real question and this was not revenge for them trying to trap him, it was a question to stir up their minds.

The intention of Jesus was always and is still always to reveal God’s kingdom and salvation to human beings and this is what He was doing here. He wanted to ask these teachers of the law and the leaders of the religion a hard question so that it can jolt their minds to really think about Kingdom matters that they did not seem to understand. They were focused on trapping him but all the while, Jesus was focused on teaching them the truth and directing them to true worship.

I see a big lesson here:

Jesus, our Lord and savior, is our example. As 1 Peter 2 has said— “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” We should endeavor to be like him and to learn from him.  And there are other verses that admonish us to be like Christ:

1 John 2:6 NIV – Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV – Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

John 13:13-16 NLT – You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.

First, the lesson is to be like him. We must be imitators of God if we say we love him. If we don’t obey him (obeying his word) wholeheartedly, our love for God is not yet complete.

1 John 2:5 NLT– But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him.

Second, do not retaliate when they try to trap you with their questions. Rather, seek to understand the root cause of why they are doing that and pray for them and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to address that. In this situation, our goal must always be to reveal Christ Jesus… our Lord and savior.

The third lesson is to remain in love, all through. Love for even those who persecute you. And the Holy Spirit will always be there to remind you to love God and do his will in all situations. He will also remind you to love every person. His promptings will always be clear. When we hear these promptings, let us harden our hearts but rather obey him wholeheartedly and with joy.

The fourth lesson is to be patient. Jesus was very patient with the Pharisees and Sadducees. He did not blast them in anger but first, patiently deal with those issues and questions they have and after that, direct them to Christ. Direct them to the real bigger issue… do they know him? Are they in a close relationship with him?

V42-45 – Jesus, the messiah has always been from the beginning. He was only revealed by coming to earth at the time He came. But He has always been present, from the beginning. The Pharisees and Sadducees, and the whole Israelite nation did not seem to understand that.

They thought that the Messiah would be a physical human being who would come to liberate them from their oppression from the Romans. They did not seem to understand that the Messiah actually already existed since the foundation of the earth and that all things were created through him. And so, if the Messiah existed since the beginning…. How then could He be a son (descendant) of David?

Even though David, their forefather, knew that the Messiah was his Lord and was God, David’s descendants (the Israelites) still seemed to think that He would be a mere human being.

How could the Messiah be just a human being yet He already existed at the beginning??

There was no way that the Messiah would be just any human being. If He has been from the beginning, even before David, then He was not a human. He was and is God himself. Because it is God who has always existed since the start. In fact, He himself is the Alpha and Omega. He himself was the beginning and He is the end.

The Israelites, Pharisees and Sadducees, had not ever been able to understand that.

And so the big question that Jesus was directing them to was this ….. “Who is this Messiah really?” or “Do we really understand who the Messiah is?”

The Israelites did not understand who the Messiah was. Yet at this point, he was right in front of them. They were seeing God physically but did not realize it. They were so bound to their wrong teaching such that when Jesus said to them directly that He was the messiah and He was God, they could not take it yet it was true. They had God in their midst but did not notice. We see this in another part of scripture which puts this perfectly in context:

John 8:58 NIV – Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Here are other verses that show that He was present from the beginning:

1 John 1  NLT – We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.

John 1 NIV – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

V46 – They could not dare ask another question after this because they knew they could not trap him. He had turned the script over and posed them with a difficult question that would really cause them to think if they really knew the God whom they say they knew and whom they taught people about.

(Oh Father, thank you, thank you for Christ who was from the beginning, who is now my example to follow. Help me to truly imitate him and live like him.)

Matthew 22: 34-40 (LOVE)

V34-35 The Pharisees and Sadducees, out of their hate for Jesus because of how He was changing everything, seemed to have ganged to try and put him down. Because of their hate, they came up  with ways of trying to catch him in a wrong. And it’s interesting because they themselves were already against him so they had already closed their hearts to him, they were only looking for a way to “convincingly” accuse him before the people and then arrest him.

Matthew 21:46 ESV – And although they were seeking to arrest him, they feared the crowds, because they held him to be a prophet.

They wanted to poison people’s minds against him. That is why Jesus said to them:

Matthew 23:13 NLT – “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.

While the Lord Jesus was perfect, we are not. We are being perfected so that we become like him. And so, in the process of perfection, we have to be careful not to be like the Pharisees and Sadducees. They are an example from God to us. Sometimes, we may find ourselves in a place where our hearts do not love one another and so because of that, we poison each other’s minds against each other.

If a believer does something which is faulty or says something which is faulty, our role is not to gang up against them. No, we must first have the understanding that all of us are in a journey of being perfected to be like Jesus, and therefore, we must forgive them and pray for them. In fact, Paul told Timothy this:

1 Timothy 2:1 TLB – Here are my directions: Pray much for others; plead for God’s mercy upon them; give thanks for all he is going to do for them.

Let us also remember to always make room for each other’s faults:

Colossians 3:13 NLT – Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.

We have a continuous labor of love to carry.

V36-38 – I MUST love the Lord my God with all my heart, all my soul, and all my mind. This is the greatest commandment.

It’s a command, not a recommendation.

How do I love Him with all my heart? – I am reminded of the hymn “Take my heart and let it be consecrated Lord to thee.” Loving the Lord with all my heart is to love him wholeheartedly, with no other affections for any other. There should be no other thing/person/item that I love more than him.  One of the things that usually helps to measure Love is how much TIME you spend with someone. How much time in my day to day life do I give to the Lord? to prayer? to the word?

How do I love with all my soul? The soul is the seat of emotions and affections. My emotions must be for him. I must take my joy to Him, same as how I must take my pain to him. I must take my tears to him and my rejoicing. I must also submit my anger to his word and his will. I must also take all my anxiety to him… He is the one who knows the deepest parts of me and therefore I must share my life with Him.

How do I love him with all my mind? This is about me loving him with all my thoughts. Are my thoughts pure and directed or controlled by the Holy Spirit and God’s word? Are my thought patterns directed by God’s word? Are my decisions submitted to God’s word? Do I obey the leading of the Holy Spirit as prompted by my conscience?

1 Timothy 1: 18-19 NIV – Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.

The Living Bible puts v19 this way:

“Cling tightly to your faith in Christ and always keep your conscience clear, doing what you know is right. For some people have disobeyed their consciences and have deliberately done what they knew was wrong. It isn’t surprising that soon they lost their faith in Christ after defying God like that.”

DON’T BRING SHAME TO THE NAME OF CHRIST BY DOING WHAT YOU KNOW YOU OUGHT NOT TO DO.

V39 – I MUST also love my neighbor as myself.

This is made even simpler by this verse:

Matthew 7:12 AMP – “So then, in everything treat others the same way you want them to treat you, for this is [the essence of] the Law and the [writings of the] Prophets.

Lord, help me to love you and to love my neighbor. I fail so many times. Have mercy in me and cause me to do your will. For these two are the simplest ways of understanding your will ie …what you want me to do.

In verse 40, the Lord says that these two sum up all that the law and the prophets demanded. It’s really as simple as that.

Matthew 22: 23-33 (Jesus the Resurrection)

V23-28 – The Sadducees and Pharisees all had one common agenda –to undermine Jesus. They do the same here.

Matthew clearly states beforehand, to give us context, that the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection. So when they come to ask Jesus about matters of resurrection, is it because they are interested in knowing the truth or because they want to “trap” him?

It is quite clear that they wanted to trap him. And so, they thought of the best question that they thought they could trap him with. In their eyes, this was a very clever question.  The reason they seem to think that this is a very good trap for Jesus is simply because they think that life after resurrection is the same as life on earth. They qualify their question based on human intellect and disbelief. They think that since a woman can only be married to one man, there is no way that there can be a resurrection because if there was, who would this woman be married to? And so just because they are convinced that there would be absolute confusion regarding who the woman would be married, they decide that then there is definitely no resurrection. Their own human thought processes about the matter make them rub off that there is ressurection. Their faith is based on their human reasoning and not on what scripture says.

And of course we see how wrong they are.

This is a very big warning— we cannot approach Godly matters with mere human reasoning. If you are unable to reason God out, that does not mean that He is not existent.

The Christian life is a journey of Faith. And our Faith is built by understanding and believing the word of God. We do not walk this journey by human intellect but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. We believe what He says and trust Him.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 ASV – He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end.

Its clear therefore that man does not need to understand God in what He does, we only need to trust and obey what He has given us. We should not conjure up ideas of God based on human reasoning. We should learn to take God at his word. There are many things that God has hidden from man, and that’s okay. But there is also a lot that God has revealed about himself and that is found in the scripture.

Deuteronomy 29:29 NIV – The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

The days of ignorance are gone. We know the truths of God that have been revealed in his word and so we are to obey:

Acts 17:30-31 ESV – The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

This reminds of the words of a blessed hymn:

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus

Just to take Him at His Word

Just to rest upon His promise

Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord”

V29-32 – Jesus, in his response, answers the question by pointing out a number of things. This is because He knows their superficial problem but He also knows their deep problem.

First, He says that their mistake is that they do not know or understand scripture. As religious leaders, they of course knew the Torah and the prophets but did they understand?? The Bible talks about how ignorance brings death. A rejection of God’s word means that we have rejected knowledge– the knowledge that comes from God’s word.

Hosea 4:6-9 NIV – my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. “Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children. The more priests there were, the more they sinned against me; they exchanged their glorious God for something disgraceful. They feed on the sins of my people and relish their wickedness. And it will be: Like people, like priests. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.

When we reject God’s word or are ignorant of the same, we reject life. For there is so much that the Bible says about God’s word – listening and heeding.

John 6:63 NIV – The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.

Isaiah 55:3 NLT – “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.

Philippians 2:16 NLT – Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.

Ephesians 5:25-26 TPT – And to the husbands, you are to demonstrate love for your wives with the same tender devotion that Christ demonstrated to us, his bride. For he died for us, sacrificing himself to make us holy and pure, cleansing us through the showering of the pure water of the Word of God.

Jesus’s then secondly makes it clear that in the resurrection, there will be no marriage. This answers their question, the question they had thought was so crafty.

Jesus then thirdly makes it clear that there is a resurrection of the dead. God is the God of the Living, not the dead. For He said “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”  In a way, you can visualize this as if God is saying these words while looking at Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is their God currently  -like right now He is their God – because they are alive.

The message about the resurrection from the dead is critical to our understanding. We must always remember it. And who is the resurrection? It is Jesus.

John 11:25-26 NIV – Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

And here is more of God’s word on this:

Philippians 3: 20-21 NIV – But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

John 6:39-40 NIV– And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

1 Corinthians 15:12-14, and 20-21 NIV – But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith…………..But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.

V33 – The crowds were astonished at Jesus’s teaching. It was powerful and the Pharisees and Sadducees could not corner him with their tricks which were inspired by evil.

(Help me Father, not to be ignorant of your word but to be diligent in reading, studying and understanding it. Thank you for your holy spirit, my teacher, who teaches me of all things and reminds me of everything you have said to me. As my shepherd, teach me your voice, that I shall hear your words, your precepts, your promises and your rebuke. Let me love to listen to your voice— your voice like the sound of many waters as you say in Ezekiel 43:2. May the water of your word cleanse me and purify me. Mold me to be like you, Lord Jesus.)

Matthew 22: 15-22 (The Glory Due his Name)

Tuesday, October 24, 2023

V15 – The pharisees wanted to trap Jesus into saying something He could be arrested for. Their intention to go and see Jesus is not to get life and counsel, it is to undermine him and find a way to “defeat” Him.

They were going to justify themselves. They wanted him to be seen as a revolutionary against Rome. They called him false prophet, they said He casts out demons by Beelzebub, and called him a glutton and a drunkard. They never went to him for the forgiveness of sin.

When I come before Jesus, what is my attitude? Am I going before him to justify my actions? Am I trying to make him look as if He is wrong? Am I going with an attitude that his commandments are tough to follow and obeying his word to be impossible? Am I coming before him with excuses?

My heart must be careful to come before him with the right understanding. And this is it…. He is perfect (it is impossible for him to be wrong), He has good thoughts towards me (not evil), He is not eagerly looking for a way to punish me, He has no evil in him, He gives me life, He is my savior – the one I come to for salvation and redemption.

I must come before him with brokenness. That must be my continuous sacrifice.

Psalm 51:17 NIV – My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.

V16 – They use flattering words to him yet even they know deep in their hearts that He is indeed truthful but they are not saying that with a clean heart.

Beware against flattery.

Proverbs 29:5 MSG– A flattering neighbor is up to no good; he’s probably planning to take advantage of you.

The meaning of the word “Flatter” is “lavish praise and compliments on (someone), often insincerely and with the aim of furthering one’s own interests.”

V17-V18 – “Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” This was their question but Jesus knows their evil motives. Jesus asks them directly why they wanted to trap him.

May the Lord give us discernment to always know when people pretend to have pure motives when they actually evil in their purpose. Here Jesus knew their intention and was therefore very wise in his response.

He did not play into their trap.

But thank God who protects us. When a person with an evil intention sets a trap for us, the Lord saves us from it. Ours is to walk humbly and sincerely with the Lord. He is the one who knows people’s inner motives and intentions.

Proverbs 26:27 NIV – Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them.

Psalms 35:7-10 GNTA – Without any reason they laid a trap for me and dug a deep hole to catch me. But destruction will catch them before they know it; they will be caught in their own trap and fall to their destruction! Then I will be glad because of the Lord; I will be happy because he saved me. With all my heart I will say to the Lord, “There is no one like you. You protect the weak from the strong, the poor from the oppressor.”

V19-21 – Give to Caesar what is his, and give to God what is his.

Jesus had one purpose for his coming – to do his father’s will. And at this very moment, we see how the master turns around this “trap” into an opportunity to preach. Instead of discussing with them about taxes, Jesus goes beyond that.

The picture on the coin was of Caesar and so Jesus says that you should give to Caesar what is his. It is his anyway. The image of Caesar was imprinted on that coin and so Caesar had a right to his property. He made the coins and put his image on them. If He demanded a part of his coins back, then its okay.

But then Jesus says something more: Give to God what belongs to God. And that is the sermon. He points them to God. He points them to reflect on what belongs to God and whether they are giving God what He deserves.

There is something extremely wise in what Jesus says…. Human beings have the image of God imprinted on them, just like Caesar’s image was imprinted on that coin. The coin had an image of Caesar.

Genesis 1:27 NIV – So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

And so because we have been created in God’s image, He then deserves what belongs to Him. And so, the question becomes ” What belongs to God?”

  • The glory due his name
  • My utmost devotion
  • My praise
  • My worship
  • My sacrifice
  • Fruitfulness
  • Obedience to his word
  • My thanksgiving

He deserves my all. He is the one who saves us and gives us life. We cannot live on earth as if we created ourselves and do not have his image and likeness.

1 Chronicles 16: 28-30 NIV – Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.

Reflection: Am I giving the Lord what belongs to Him? What He deserves?

Oh Lord, I fail so many times in giving you all the glory you deserve. I place many limits on what I think you deserve not realizing that you indeed deserve it all… you are my creator, I live because you designed it that way in your own wisdom. Why should I be so deceived and be led astray by my own thoughts and ideas of who you are? Have Mercy on me, my God my creator. Help me to give you what belongs to you. Search me Oh Lord and know me, see the hidden things in my life, correct me and lead me in the path of life. Grant me Oh Lord to know you intimately and very closely. Grant me to fear you and to worship you in holiness. Grant me the strength and ability to do everything as unto you. Give me a clean heart Oh Lord and teach me worship you in truth. Let my walk on earth be sincere and truthful. Move me away from all lying, thievery and human tricks because I know these do not lead me to life. Let me led by your precious Holy Spirit. I surrender to you, I need you, I realize my need for you and how weak I am. Be glorified in my life. Amen.

Matthew 22: 1-14 (ABIDE in the STRAIGHT and NARROW)

V1-2 – This parable teaches that God has prepared a place, a feast for his son. Being God, this banquet will be extraordinary and full of splendor.

God has prepared this feast for his only begotten son, Jesus Christ. It will be Jesus’s wedding feast. And therefore there will be a bride.

V3-6  – There are people who were invited to the feast. They were to go and celebrate and dine with Him. But as we can see, they refused to come. The servants are sent out again, the second time, to tell those who were invited that the feast is ready. But those who were invited refused and went on to their businesses, farms and their own things. Others killed and hurt the messengers.

There is a great mystery here.

These verses refer to the Children of Israel who has been called by God and were his chosen people. They were his first invited people. But they refused to follow the Lord. They killed the messengers (the prophets) and eventually killed Jesus.

V7-10 – The King now decided to invite everyone else. The guests He had invited at first were not worthy of that honor. And so now, everyone else was invited. EVERYONE! Not a select few, every person!

Dear friends, everyone has been CALLED to the feast now. Every person has an invitation from the King who is God Almighty. And He has made this invitation by making a way through Jesus Christ. Everyone person who believes in Him will be saved and will have eternal life.

John 3:16 NIV – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

V11-14 – But everyone who is invited and who has accepted the call to go to the feast must have the right clothing.

The Lord has prepared a banquet where his people who have endured to the end will come to marriage with Jesus and dine with God. The banquet is the marriage supper of the lamb.

Revelation 19:6-9 ESV – Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”

From another angle, we see that Jesus said He has gone to prepare a place for his disciples.

John 14: 1-6 NIV – Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Jesus the Way to the Father Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

So, Jesus is the way to the banquet and we (the bride) prepare and clothe ourselves with the right clothing if we are to be present at the banquet and to come into perfect union with Him. From the verses in Revelation, it is clear that the Bride clothes herself with fine linen, bright and pure.

And what does that fine linen mean?? “for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.”

Ephesians 2: 10 KJV – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The “righteous acts” are the outworking of one’s faith, which are visible to the human eye. God ordained that those who are created in Christ Jesus do good works. And God prepared the good works that we should do beforehand. King James Version says He prepared these good works so that we “walk in them.” This means that He prepared these good works for us so that we can live doing them, they become our way of life.

But how do we clothe ourselves? How do we do these good works?

I believe and agree with the statement that “the Book of Revelation appears to correlate invisible (inward / in-working) faith with visible (outward / out-working) faith.”  (words from a certain website). This means that these righteous acts are a result of what has happened in the inside of us. As we get renewed in the knowledge of Him who has saved us, we bear fruits of righteousness.

And so it is obvious that whoever is truly in Christ will bear fruit. If you are not bearing the fruit of righteousness, then we are not in Him.

We abide in Him, and then automatically, we will bear fruit. This is what Jesus says:

John 15: 1-6 NIV – I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful.  You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.

And how do we remain in Him? Colossians chapter 3 gives us a very clear way that we abide in Jesus. It says that we set our hearts on the things above, where Christ is. It says we think and meditate on the things of God. We set our hearts on his word and feast on it so that we can know Him. We set our hearts to dwell in his presence in prayer and in communion with Him. We set our hearts to attend and be in fellowship with other believers. And more and more… We set our hearts on the things above, where Christ is… the things of God.

Here is:

Colossians 3: 1-17 NIV – Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

We abide in Jesus, setting our hearts on Him and the things above where He is and as a result, we know Him and get to bear fruit. This outward fruit, which will be seen, even by those around us, are the righteous acts of the saints. And there is more and more that God will lead us to do provided we abide in Him.

As an example, when we abide in Him, we are led by the Holy Spirit and we therefore bear the fruit of the Spirit:

Galatians 5:22-23 NLT – But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

In verse, we see that the one who is called but does not have the right clothing will be thrown out of the feast! This one will not participate in that wedding feast. Outside there, where the person will be thrown out, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. It will be a place of pain and regret.

And so the saying becomes clear… “For many are called, but few are chosen.”  Basically, Many are called because everyone has indeed been called to the wedding feast, but few are chosen. Few have the right clothing required for the feast. These are those who remain in the straight and narrow road that leads to life, to the wedding of the Lamb of God.

Matthew 7:14 Berean Literal Bible – For small is the gate and narrow the way leading to life, and few are those finding it.

The church must not forget that it is the BRIDE — It is not yet the “wife”
